Because there is no screening for this
disease. Ovarian cancer is a silent disease, it doesn't really show it self until it's too
late. There may be symptoms like gas, low back pain maybe feeling like you have the
flu. But folks blame these symptoms on something else stress, food habits etc.. and
wait until it gets so bad that they go to the docs. Doctors don't think of ovarian
cancer until it's too late. All of this must change.
Unlike breast
cancer which has mammography, breast self exam, ultrasound etc... ovarian
cancer has no screening test schedule in place.
Pinksunrise is trying to change this.
Pinksunrise my women's health advocacy group has decided for it's first project
to establish a set and accepted screening guideline for ovarian cancer. While the
symptoms of ovarian cancer can be vague and attributed to other problems if given regular
transvaginal ultrasounds we save more lives.
Our goals:
- Transvaginal ultrasounds,
along with regular rectal-vaginal exams and if necessarythe blood test Ca-125 will go a
long ways to unmask and slay this monster.
- What has to be done is to establish a ovarian screening
schedule, this is what Pinksunirse is trying to do.
- I'm writing an article about using transvaginal
ultrasound as a safe, easy way to screen women. So far I'll be talking
with the doctor heading up a study at the National Cancer Institute of women being
screened with this technique. I've also spoke with other experts in this field.
I need something from you.
There is much you can do to help get the word out about ovarian screening.
I need to hear experiences, your stories about ovarian screening and cancer, this includes
relatives, friends any one you think has this experience. Also I need to find the
docs and there are a few of them who are routinely using transvaginal ultrasound to guard
the health of their female patients.
Together we can get transvaginal ultrasound as an established and accepted method to
screen and detect early ovarian cancer. We can save lives.
Remember back in the 70s?
No one was getting mammography- today you can't escape hearing about them.
This is what we need to do for ovarian screening.
Please help me do this, if you feel you have something to share please e-mail me at:

Signs & Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer
by Sue Spataro, RN, BSN
Ovarian cancer is our most deadliest gynecologic cancer. It ranks number 4 in the
cause of cancer deaths in women. Most of us have a less that 2% lifetime chance of
developing ovarian cancer. But, every year over 25,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian
cancer. But once diagnosed with ovarian cancer 75% of women will die within 5 years of
their diagnosis. Early detection is the key. How can you tell if you have it?

There is so much in the media that scares the living life out of us. Breast
cancer is one topic that manages to catch all of our attention. The media report
all the bad news and statistics but neglect to tell us what they really mean. |
