  • Have you ever sent your husband out for sanitary napkins and he came home with Dinette dinner napkins?
  • Do you think that men look women like we are from another planet?
  • And are PMS and menopause words which makes your hubby visibly cringe and run hiding in the bathroom?

bekkar.jpg (3400 bytes)Well, Dr. Bruce Bekkar has written a book just for him and YOU.  His book Your Guy's Guide to Gynecology covers the ABCs of women's reproductive health, he removes the secret curtain that surrounds "that part" of a woman' s body.  Not only is his book enlightening for any man but really helps women get in touch with how her body works- whether it's during pregnancy, menopause, or during her monthly menstrual cycle.

Your Guy's Guide to Gynecology presents all of this information, and it is thorough, in a funny and very friendly way.  The quizzes before each chapter will cause you both to laugh and learn; all at the same time.

Dr. Bruce Bekkar is a board-certified practicing gynecologist in California. Dr. Bekkar wrote this book along with Dr. Udo Wahn to help bridge the communication gap between men and women.

"....Nothing is more significant in male-female relationships than communications and understanding.  And that's exactly what this book is intended to promote-communication and understanding."

Dr. Bekkar fosters this level of understanding by throwing all the medical terms out the window and replacing them with simple language and explanations.

Your guys Guide to Gynecology is an excellent book for both men and women. It will lead to better relationships through better understand.

Hi Dr. Bruce, great to talk with you.  Your book Your Guy's Guide to Gynecology is the only one on the market today that explains women to men : ).   It's a super book : ).

Why Buy This Book?

click here to find out more about SueSue:
Most guys shy or run away from any matters dealing with health. This includes even their own health. Why would a guy buy this book??

bekkar.jpg (3400 bytes)Dr. Bruce:

Great question! At first, we expect that more women will buy this book- for the men in their lives, as well as for themselves. Women, after all, were the inspiration for Your Guy's Guide to Gynecology. Many patients complained to us that they couldn't talk to their partners about the simplest "female problems" without the guys turning green or running out to the garage. Our hope is that women will bring our book home for their partners, and they'll use it together to deal with those "female problems."

Surprisingly, some men are already going out and buying this book on their own! These guys, like those who attend our very successful guys-only class called "Women, their Hormones and You (W.H.Y.?) have discovered that "female problems" affect them too. They want to understand, and they want to help.

Getting Your Partner Interested

Sue:
Your book Your Guys Guide to Gynecology is fabulous for everyone; especially women. I love the way you cover all bases of women's health and  find this to be an excellent reference book. The question is, how would a woman reading this book get her partner interested in it too??

bekkar.jpg (3400 bytes)Dr. Bruce:

Just let him see it!
This is not a typical medical book; it's "guy-friendly," with interactive quizzes, sports analogies and even a little humor (for instance, there's a "Top 10 List of Things You Never Say to Women with PMS"). We purposely wrote it this way, to make these awkward topics easier to learn about.

The purpose of Your Guy's Guide to Gynecology is to make men comfortable for the first time with women's reproductive health, and then teach them how to help in ways that their partners will appreciate. In our experience, once they begin to understand, they want to learn more.

Myths & Misconceptions

click here to find out more about SueSue:
In your many years of experience what have you found to be the biggest misconception or problem between men and women when it comes to women's reproductive health???

Dr. Bruce:

There are two primary problems:
Most guys don't understand the basics about women's reproductive health, and they spend too much time "fixing" their partners without listening to them.

Our own research has shown that guys lack fundamental knowledge about women's reproductive anatomy; this makes topics like estrogen, menstrual cycles and fertility very mysterious. Our book covers this information in the first chapter, "Basic Female Stuff," and then goes on to issues that effect couples frequently, like birth control, pregnancy planning, PMS, menopause, bladder infections, fibroids, and even gynecologic surgery. These topics are much less confusing once the guys know the basics.

About "fixing" their partners:
men have been problem-solvers for their mates since the first cave-woman said to her spouse,

"Honey, that dinosaur outside is really bothering me!" He figured she wanted him to "fix the problem," and guys have been killing dinosaurs for their partners ever since.

This kind of behavior works fine when the complaint is, "The light bulb is out in the bathroom," but it doesn't when she says, "My period is heavy, I have cramps and my breasts are sore." In the second case, instead of needing something fixed, she's asking for him to listen.

Guys usually don't appreciate the therapeutic value of simply listening without interrupting
something women have known forever. The good news is that men can learn to do this once they see how well it works. By reading Your Guy's Guide to Gynecology, guys will actually learn to listen!

PMS

Sue:
We all hear the late night jokes about PMS. Men fear and women suffer with it. What is the most important thing guys should know and do when it comes to living with a woman with PMS??

bekkar.jpg (3400 bytes)Dr. Bruce:
Most importantly, the Premenstrual Syndrome is real (it's not "all in her head"), it's very common, and there are several things guys can do to make life better for their partners (as well as themselves).

A couple of suggestions:

  • Decrease her stress:
    help out more around the house and delay difficult conversations until she's feeling better;
  • If she's having a bad day,
ask her how she's feeling; then, really listen to her entire answer without interrupting.

at the end of Chapter 6, "The Attack of the Killer Hormones."

This book was written with guys in mind, but many women have told us that they'd like to read it too. They like the idea of a medical book that doesn't take itself too seriously, that uses interactivity and even a little humor to decipher a difficult topic. Both men and women need to understand women's reproductive health, because it's central to relationships and family life.
