atwell.jpg (7474 bytes)buddysystem.jpg (4682 bytes)I was excited about turning forty - for me it meant new beginnings and an abundance of fresh personal choices that offer fulfillment.  I feel wiser, more confident, grounded in who I am, and calmer.  I also noticed that my body was changing and needed a little bit more attention than what I have  given it in the past.  Unfortunately, I was a horrid eater even though I maintained a fairly slender body even through three pregnancies.  I lived on sugar, dairy foods, and carbs.  I noticed that though I wasn't eating more, my tummy seemed to be growing.  When I did manage to drop a few pounds, my middle never changed size!

I have always known I eat too much sugar and thought I should control it, but I was never motivated to really do this until I had a couple of mild episodes of shaking, dizziness, and confusion after having not eaten for a few hours.  It scared me.  I don't want to be diabetic or suffer with heart problems.  I decided I needed a healthy plan.  I started hearing about The Menopause Diet on Hotflash!, the on-line perimenopause support group and web site, and ordered the book and cookbook.   Within two days I was using the plan totally convinced this was the perfect way for me to go.

How shocked I was when after the very first week I lost two pounds and felt like my stomach was bulging less than normal!  I'd had headaches almost daily for years.  They were not migraines; more like the nagging kind. After one week of eating healthy, my headaches stopped!  Another shock.  I gained this incredible sense of calm inside my body.  I was no longer suffering the ups and downs (physically, emotionally, and mentally) which had become a normal part of my life.   There was this steadiness and peacefulness deep within my body.  My swelling also disappeared.  I used to have days where my rings would be tight on my fingers.   Now they slipped off and on easily all day and all night long.  My moods were much lighter, I found myself energized and needing less sleep, and I no longer had to drag out of bed in the mornings and feel awful for an hour or two before tackling my day.   And my tummy continued to disappear!  I couldn't believe that as I had never seen that happen before.

I plan to eat this way for the rest of my life. To me, it is not a "diet". It is now a way of life.  I want to live and I want to live life to its fullest.  I couldn't do that if I was sickly, exhausted, or too heavy for my feet and hips to be healthy.  I have adapted a lot of the food choices to fit my life and it has been easy to do so.  I am never hungry but instead, always very satisfied. When I "cheat" and eat sugary, high carb, or greasy rich foods I regret it - not because I feel guilty for breaking my "diet" but because I find myself feeling sapped, swollen, and sluggish.  It isn't worth the moment of indulgence!  I am so glad that I found this eating plan and I certainly recommend it to every woman I know!

Stuck on a plateau, but I am looking better
From: Cindy
fitandtrim.jpg (5087 bytes)buddysystem.jpg (4682 bytes)I'm new to this group and am back at working out (3-5x/wk (step classes/stretch & tone) for the past 5 weeks. I have noticed a difference in my clothes and in my endurance and flexibility (will update this when I take my measurments this week). It is so invigorating and I can't believe I waited so long to get back into exercising. It does nothing but good for you!   I was on Weight Watchers from Sept-April and lost 25ish lbs. I've been at a plateau for the past 3 months. The scale isn't showing that much of a loss, but I can really see and feel the difference in my body.
Looking forward to reading more results!

Weight gain after hysterectomy, doing a low carb diet
From: Pauline
Sorry. I too have gained 30 lbs. since I had my ovaries removed. Dr. had me on Zoloft (anti-depressant like paxil and Prozac) for depression and anxiety do to hormonal shift. From all the research I've found out from others on anti-depressants, so many have gained weight on them.

Also, to much estrogen causes weight gain if not opposed with use of progesterone. Progesterone is the naturally occurring hormone that monopolized the luteral phase of our monthly cycles (the last 2 weeks prior to the menses-periods) Progesterone even overshoots estrogen during this time. It is still an essential hormone to have, even is we don't have ovaries or a uterus, as it helps to prevent weight gain and also protects cell growth in breast tissue, which can lead to breast cancer.

A very good book that explains this is A Woman's Guide to Natural Hormones by Christine Conrad." I spent 3 months weaning slowly off the Zoloft and now am o! n an herbal alternative that does tWell, please don't despair, I too am trying to shed this weight by walking and swimming and it's coming off SOOOOOO slowly. I also eat a very low carb diet and low in fat (saturated fats from meat and found in all baked products like breads, cakes, ice cream) Sugar to I stay away from as it it high in carbs. Mostly I eat lots of chicken, turkey, fish, salads, fresh fruits and vegetables and V-8 juice. No breads, cereals, desserts, juices, potatoes, pasta of any kind.
Hang in there.

Why do we overeat?
And why do we overeat the foods we do?
by Sue Spataro, RN, BSN
This is not a simple question and the answer is not easy to find - in fact the answers will be different for each person. There are so many emotional ties to food that we all find it difficult to separate what we need to eat from what we want to eat. Find out why we overeat and what you can do to regain control in our FREE support group program.
